A social soldier fights for underprivileged kids

Captain Navin Gulia from Gurgaon is a source of inspiration and is helping many spread their wings despite being confined to a wheelchair. Gulia has been instrumental in giving a new sense of freedom to many differently-able and underprivileged children. At the special centre ADAA, 'Apni Duniya Apna Aashiyana' in Gurgaon, there are many differently-abled and underprivileged children waiting to take their first steps of freedom. In 1994, after a nasty injury, Captain Gulia was left paralysed from waist below and was confined to a wheelchair. His army career was cut short, but grit and determination kept this soldier going. Captain Gulia set up ADAA in 2005 and so far, the centre has helped more than 2000 underprivileged children.

From being a soldier in the army to being a soldier for the society, I have tried to do my bit for the people,” said Gulia. Captain Gulia has been an example of courage under fire. Despite his disability, he set his sights high on various adventure sports and expeditions to some of the remotest spots. In 2006, Gulia was formally recognised with a national role model award by the then Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam. Helping Captain Gulia be an inspiration to others is his better half Khushi, whom Gulia met over the internet seven years back. “We are happily married for seven years now. His disability never came in the way. I feel happy and proud to see him climb the ladder of success,” said Khushi. Karamvir Puruskar winner Captain Navin Gulia has never accepted defeat. Despite his physical disability, his immense mental strength has helped him overcome hurdles and find the ground beneath his feet. And that is what makes his life a little less ordinary.
