The common house sparrow is not so common anymore and seems to have vanished from the cities. The tiny bird is now battling for survival having witnessed a sharp decline in most Indian cities

. An elderly woman in Gandhinagar has a plan to bring them back. In a new green initiative, Jayaben accompanied by her grandchildren has brought home an earthen sparrow nest. She plans to place it in her house so that the common house sparrow can nest in it. Like Jayaben, hundreds of Kalol residents in Gandhinagar have decided to do their bit in saving the sparrows. Jayaben Nayak said, "I had got a nest last year and I've put it in my house. The sparrows have made their nest and have even laid eggs." Her granddaughter Purva Nayak says, "I'll put the nest in my house and save the sparrows."
From young children to older gentlemen, hundreds of people of Kalol town in Gandhinagar district have lined up enthusiastically for collecting the artificial sparrow nests and drinking water bowls being distributed by an NGO. Volunteers from the NGO Greenplanet say they expect sparrows to prepare nests and lay eggs in at least 4000 earthen nests that have been distributed. Ahmed Pathan, President, Greenplanet, says, "Such small initiatives will encourage and inspire others to follow suit. I believe with combined efforts, we will be able to bring back the sparrows." Urban pollution, lack of housing has taken a toll on the birds. Now with a little help from their human friends, the sparrows can sing again!
