Doctor gives free cosmetic surgery to rural India

Dr Vikram Shetty has taken cosmetic surgery to the interiors of India and that too for free. He's giving the youth a fresh lease of life and helping them look just the way they want to. When Vijisha, 25, speaks her words are incomprehensible, but the hope in her eyes is palpable. She and Greshma are waiting for a cosmetic surgery at the Maxillo Facial Unit in Justic KS Hegde hospital in Mangalore, which will be free of cost. Greeshma said, "I want to change my face and my nose. To whatever extent they can change my face will help me."
Vijisha's sister, Vinisha, has already undergone cosmetic surgery performed by Dr Shetty. "I got the surgery done and have now brought my sister along. I work as a teacher but couldn't face students and talk to them properly earlier. Now I'm more confident. I'm also getting married in two months," said Vinisha. The magic wand of cosmetic surgery, a rare luxury for Vijisha and others like her, has now been made possible by Dr Shetty and his team. Dr Shetty said, "It's not a luxury for them to start looking good. Their social life, their marriage, their future all are at stake. When they don't look acceptable to public, they're psychologically very traumatised because of the insults they face." Refusing to cater to vanities of the urban rich, Dr Shetty decided to alter the lives of those in need. And since then, he has conducted over 750 surgeries, all free of charge. "These are regular patients, who face day-to-day toil and hardships and just want to be treated equally and with respect. And it's for these patients, who wish they are judged on their mind and heart rather than their looks, who come to us for surgery," said Dr Shetty. Dr Shetty and his team now hold camps across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, and the response has been overwhelming. Justice KS Hegda charitable hospital Director Vinay Hegde said, "We do this as a responsibility and duty to do something to give back to society. The intuitionist is subsidising to the extent of Rs three crore every year." Giving hope to the hopeless, Dr Shetty and his team have done the unimaginable - they've transformed the fairy tale into reality and turned the reality into a fairy tale for these young people.
